Title: Semi-Airborne EM is Transforming Resource Exploration

Abstract:

Airborne and ground electromagnetic methods have been utilized to explore for minerals, groundwater, and other extractable resources for more than six decades. Today, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) configured with a lightweight EM sensor is deployed reducing both time and cost of the data collection. When a ground-based transmitter is utilized, the depth of exploration is increased along with resolution. The net result is a high-definition volumetric map of variations in the surface electrical conductivity. Advances in 3D numerical modeling, data analytics, combined with high-definition geophysical imaging data and AI-concepts have the potential to transform the exploration process from anomaly detection to defining, in significant detail, the geology and geological processes.

Semi-airborne electromagnetics (SAEM) employs a powerful, transmitter to inject electrical current into the subsurface. A drone configured with a lightweight EM receiver is deployed to autonomously map the secondary magnetic field within the area of investigation. SAEM successfully combines the greater depth of investigation achievable with ground-based EM methods with the increased speed of data collection characteristic of airborne geophysical mapping and the reduced per data point cost obtainable with UAVs. Moreover, the higher quality data along with increased spatial data density directly translates to improved, more accurate 3D models.

In this presentation I will show the results of a SAEM survey in a known porphyry copper mining area and a groundwater survey on a volcanic island. Finally, I will discuss concepts to use drone EM to establish 3D array Electromagnetics aiming to enhance the resolution of the subsurface.

Title: “Improved Workflow for UAV-Gamma Ray Spectrometry: A 3D Spatial Inversion Approach”

Speaker: Neeraj Nainwal, Queens University

Bio: Neeraj Nainwal is a final-year PhD candidate at Queen’s University, Canada, supervised by Dr. Alexander Braun. His research focuses on improving UAV-borne radiometric survey workflows and combining radiometric and magnetic data using machine learning to improve mineral targeting. He completed his Master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 2020, where he worked on groundwater contamination and transport modeling using electrical resistivity methods. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience Engineering from the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, India, in 2017. He also has over a year of experience working in the oil and gas industry before returning to academia. His main interests include numerical modeling, inverse theory, and improving survey design to make geophysical studies more efficient and cost-effective. Besides his PhD, he provides consulting support for UAVborne radiometric and magnetic surveys, focusing on optimized survey planning and data
processing. After completing his PhD, he plans to continue working in this area and develop practical solutions to reduce uncertainty in field data.

Abstract: Advances in sensor miniaturization and UAV platforms have made gamma-ray spectrometry (GRS) a practical tool for high-resolution radiometric mapping. Unlike traditional helicopter surveys that use large detectors at higher altitudes, UAV surveys operate much closer to the ground with smaller detector systems. This enables more detailed measurements but also makes the observations more sensitive to terrain variations, detector footprint, and the three-dimensional geometry between the source and detector. Most radiometric processing workflows still used today were designed for higher-altitude helicopter surveys and do not explicitly account for these effects. In this study, we evaluate a terrain-aware spatial inversion approach for processing UAV-borne GRS data and compare the results with conventional processing methods. The method accounts for survey geometry, terrain effects, and the overlap of detector footprints between neighbouring measurements. To examine how these factors influence the measurements, we performed a series of synthetic sensitivity tests using simulated survey conditions. We then applied the method to two UAV radiometric datasets collected in Madison County, Montana, and Arizona. The synthetic experiments show that terrain geometry can significantly influence measured gamma-ray signals and should not be ignored during processing. Results from the field datasets indicate that conventional processing produces maps that generally follow the local geology but may contain artefacts related to footprint overlap and terrain effects. In contrast, the inversion approach produces more spatially continuous anomalies and reduces flight-line artefacts while remaining consistent with geological patterns. These results suggest that the proposed approach can improve the interpretation of modern low-altitude UAV-borne radiometric surveys Gorda Ridge.

Abstract:

Passive seismic imaging methods date back to the 1970s with the introduction of local earthquake tomography method. Since then, many new methods have been developed that exploit various natural source seismic phases to extract 3D velocity structure of the subsurface. Thanks to advancements in passive seismology datasets and methodologies, we now know much more than ever about the Earth interior, from the shallow surface to the core. Although the majority of the seismic tomography techniques are mainly used for studying deep solid earth interior, more recently developed surface wave tomography techniques have proved to be highly effective in imaging the top crustal and uppermost mantle structure at a desirable resolution to be used throughout the mineral exploration industry. Particularly, the ambient seismic noise tomography (ANT) technique can provide detailed images of the velocity structure at scales from continents to deposit scale. In this presentation, we review the history and

minimum fundamentals of the passive seismic methods including the ANT method, and then we go through some examples that passive seismic methods have been highly successful across the industry. These examples include several cases where passive seismic methods have significantly improved our current understanding of mineral system frameworks at BHP.

Bio:

Mr. Omid Bagherpur is a Principal Geophysicist at BHP Toronto and has been working with the Metals Exploration team since 2022. He has more than a decade of geophysical experience and has learned and practised various exploration geophysical methods, including passive structural seismology, throughout his PhD and postdoctoral studies, as well as 2D and 3D modeling and analyses of Magnetotellurics datasets In his M.Sc. studies. Omid also has expertise in potential field geophysics, and direct current resistivity and induced polarization methods.

Title: Satellite-derived gravity data: from ocean wide bathymetric mapping to crustal scale modelling

Abstract:

Most of our planet is covered in water, with only 20% of its bathymetric surface having been measured through shipborne acoustic methods (with resolutions of 20-100m). This leaves us to rely on a satellite-derived bathymetric model of the seafloor to fill in the remaining 80%, which boasts a resolution of 1-2 km. But how can a satellite, positioned approximately 800 km above Earth's surface, collect data that can be modelled at that resolution? This talk will outline how satellite altimetry data is collected, and what steps have been taken to turn the altimetry data into free-air anomaly data that in turn is used to produce a bathymetric surface. However, the modelling of this gravity data doesn’t need to stop at the seafloor. Three-dimensional inversion modelling allows us to study petrological changes across the seafloor as well as resolving the depth of the Moho, the boundary between the lithospheric mantle and the crust. The talk will conclude with a case study of the Lau Basin, an

actively forming back-arc basin north of New Zealand. The study’s gravity inversion modelling revealed changes in crustal composition and growth rates throughout the basin and along the volcanic arc.

Bio:

Chris Galley is a geophysicist whose work has focused on the study of ancient and modern hydrothermal systems and their associated mineralization. Through the modelling of magnetic data, he has resolved the geometry of subseafloor hydrothermal convective systems and their near surface alteration and is presently modelling the structure of sediment hosted seafloor massive sulfide deposits off the East coast of the USA. His present studies also include crustal thickness modelling of the Lau Basin (a modern back-arc basin) and the Abitibi Greenstone Belt (an ancient back-arc basin) through gravity data inversion to determine the regional controls on volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization. Chris presently holds postdoctoral positions at the University of Ottawa and Memorial University of Newfoundland. He received his PhD in Geophysics from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2022, and his BSc. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Victoria in 2015.

** SEG Mining and Mineral Exploration Committee

SEGMIN CHANGES

Earlier this fall, there were security concerns around the SEGMIN list server. Sadly, the list server is not an up-to-date modern way of communication and we have to make a change. We will be moving to an online community through Seequent that has been tested and behaves in a similar manner as the current list server, with some additional features. We will further discuss this change at the RoundUp meeting and tour the new platform. I know many like the emails that come in, and that feature will still be available (whether you like an email for each post, a weekly digest, etc). We expect the change to occur sometime early 2024.

The call for abstracts will open in January for the IMAGE24 conference in August 2024 in Houston, TX. We have been working on pushing through special sessions and field trips to SEG. More to be shared at the RoundUp meeting.

AMBIENT SEISMIC WORKSHOP

SEG & AGU will be holding an Ambient Seismic Field Studies Workshop at Colorado School of Mines on July 31 to August 2, 2024. The general technical program will contain content relevant to mineral exploration and develop, including a session focused on case studies using ambient seismic tomography for mineral exploration. Title: A Conservative Approach to Inversion with AI

Abstract:

AI offers many advantages for large data set analyses and is an attractive solution to many issues currently faced in geophysics. The physics underlying geophysical methods become increasingly complicated and time consuming to simulate as we model the Earth in ever more realistic approaches. Increasingly large or detailed models are matched by the increasingly large amounts of data we can collect in modern surveys. AI is well adapted to solve complex large data problems.

But there exist a few drawbacks to AI for physics-based analyses primarily due to the lack of direct incorporation of the underlying equations governing how the data should be analyzed. Working with geophysical data is predicated upon the concept of resolution. An inversion in a traditional sense can compute sensitivities based on the physics and creep or jump towards the best fit model to your data using guides from physics-based sensitivities whilst under some form of constraint such as model smoothness. This makes a lot of sense as it establishes a conservative framework that generates models that not only fit the data, but simultaneously supresses sporadic unresolved features not required by the data. However, similar physics-based guides and spurious feature constraints on AI models do not appear to be explicitly involved.

At the outset, it appears as if AI is both non physics based in its approach plus its lack of explicit constraint suggests results may be untrustworthy. To investigate the first drawback, we took an approach using the magnetotelluric method (MT) as it has the property of uniqueness meaning the data collected, theoretically, are representative of a singular earth model. Working initially in 1D to easily meet the uniqueness requirements allows one to attribute deviation from the true model as failure in the AI methodology. To address the second drawback, we work with a convolutional neural network (CNN) as the convolution operator offers a smoothing factor in the workflow serving to filter out spurious structure. A suitably trained CNN was validated with independent synthetic datasets, and the predicted resistivity distribution displayed an acceptable resolution and reliability, seemingly surpassing traditional smoothed inversion even when artificial noise was introduced. Based on these successes, the CNN was also used to analyze real MT data and early work in 3D demonstrates the ability of CNNs to quickly and accurately model synthetic and real world data.

Bio:

Mr. Jim Craven has been working at the Geological Survey of Canada as either a student, scientist or Section Head since 1987 after completing his Master’s degree looking at the effect of overburden on large loop UTEM responses across northern Ontario with Dick Bailey. His work at the GSC involves all aspects of magnetotelluric geophysics from data collection to analysis including co-supervising students working on Metal Earth and geothermal topics at Carleton and Laurentian Universities.

The KEGS Foundation would like to invite you to attend the inaugural symposium in honour of our late Chairman, Jerry Roth, who passed away in February 2023. Jerry was a champion of students and supported them through the formation of the KEGS Foundation, and awarding scholarships, but also by encouraging their participation in academic conferences, professional society presentations and general networking. Please join us on the afternoon of December 5th for student talks and networking. Let’s honour Jerry’s memory by encouraging the next generation of students in geophysics.

Title: AEM interpretation with the sphere model

Abstract: Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) data interpretation is a complex process. Physical property distribution inversion, which has been developed for other techniques such as magnetics and gravity, is difficult to apply to AEM data on a routine basis. Data noise and complexity of Maxwell equations make inversion process costly and ill-constrained, with the possibility of multiple solutions. An alternative method of interest in brown field exploration is the use of parametric models, such as a plate or a sphere. A sphere in free space is the oldest electromagnetic model used in mineral exploration. It can be integrated in a parametric inversion and automated to handle survey interpretation. However, it is not appropriate in situations where overburden or/and host rock are conductive. To address this problem, we developed a solution for a sphere in a layered earth. Original mathematical developments were used in this solution. Using field expansions resulting from derivative solutions of the cylindrical functions, which describe the fields propagating in the layered earth, and spherical functions, which describe the fields reflected by the sphere, we developed relationships between cylindrical and spherical functions. The secondary field originating from the sphere is estimated in the following way: the incident fields from the AEM transmitter are propagated with cylindrical functions using the Hankel transform to the surface of the sphere; the incident spherical field is estimated using spherical harmonic analysis; spherical reflection coefficients are applied to compute the spherical reflected fields; these reflected fields are transformed from spherical to cylindrical expansions using the spherical-function-cylindrical-function relationship; and the resulting field is propagated with cylindrical functions to the receiver using Hankel transform, while correcting for the reflection of the sphere on the layered earth. With appropriate layered earth reflection and transmission coefficients, the sphere can be located anywhere in the layered earth. This model has been linked to a SVD non-linear least square inversion using a modified Gauss-Newton-Marquardt method in order to invert for the sphere or/and the layered earth parameters. The model and the inversion have been tested on synthetic and field data, in particular data collected with the AirTEM system over Reid-Mahaffy, Ontario, test site. Results from these tests show the value of integrating the sphere in a layered earth model in the AEM interpretation toolbox.

As we were concerned in the validity in our algorithm, we developed for magnetotelluric modelling a public domain program, available in Fortran and Python, using the same computer functions. This program allows a comparison of the results of our model with results of numerical solutions and is available on request.

Bio: Marc Vallée graduated in geological engineering from Laval University, before completing a master’s degree in geophysics at the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in geophysics at École Polytechnique de Montréal. He has over 30 years of experience as a research scientist in applied geophysics, mainly for the Noranda Technology Center, then for Fugro Airborne Surveys and CGG companies. From 2015 to 2018, Marc was responsible for magnetic and gravity geophysical inversion as part of the NSERC-CMIC Footprints project. Since then, as AEM Expert & Marketing, he is responsible for geophysical research and development for Geo Data Solutions GDS. His expertise is mainly in the processing and interpretation of airborne electromagnetic, magnetics, gravity, and spectrometry surveys, as well as software development. Marc is the author or co-author of more that 50 scientific articles in applied geophysics.

KEGS condolences on passing of Mr. Mario Meir Steiner

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mr. Mario Meir Steiner on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. Mario was a pioneer in Geophysics in Canada, including a past president of the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society (KEGS) and a colleague and friend to many of us.

KEGS executives express their deepest condolences to Mario's family and friends.

Title: Advances in open-source 3D inversion of AFMAG data; A case study at the Méquillon deposit in Nunavik, Quebec

Abstract:

The Méquillon Deposit is part of the Nunavik Nickel Project, located within the Cape Smith Belt in Nunavik, Quebec and was acquired by Canadian Royalties (CRI) in 2001. Méquillon is a magmatic Ni-Cu-PGM deposit, related to a suite of mafic to ultramafic intrusions that occur throughout the Nunavik Nickel Project, and which have been explored since the 1950s. Méquillon consists of disseminated and net-textured sulfides at the base of a composite, steeply dipping ultramafic intrusive body. The body intruded near strongly conductive pyrrhotite- and graphite-rich argillites within the sedimentary country rock. The combination of disseminated sulfide mineralization, strongly resistive host intrusion, and highly conductive layers within the country rock results in a highly complex EM signature for the deposit.

CRI’s mandate, to find new deposits and extend the limits of existing resources, led to testing new regional exploration tools to overcome some of the challenges posed by a deposit like Méquillon. Mira Geoscience was contracted to establish the feasibility of detecting the deposit within its geological environment with the ZTEM™ (Z-Axis Tipper Electromagnetic) airborne system using forward modelling exercise. After a conclusive investigative study, a ZTEM™ test survey was conducted by Geotech in 2021.

Mira Geoscience was then mandated to perform a 3D inversion of the newly collected data to validate that the ore body has a clear signature in the inversion model. The UBC-GIF MTZ3D program was first used to perform the inversion but, due to limitations in model results related to the computational problem’s size with MTZ3D, it was decided to test the open-source Python package SimPEG (Heagy et al, 2017). This presentation will compare these 3D inversion results over the deposit and demonstrate that SimPEG 3D model results improved the characterisation of Méquillon’s signature in a complex geophysical environment.

Bio:

Stanislawa Hickey obtained a MSc in Geophysics, Resources and Environment from Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France. After graduating she moved to Canada to start a career in the mining industry, where she spent her early years gathering experience in the field and in geophysical data acquisition working with Abitibi Geophysics and Frontier Geosciences. In 2010, she joined Mira Geoscience’s consulting team where she now works as a Senior Geophysicist. She is based in Montreal.

KEGS Ottawa November Meeting

Speaker: Calvin Klatt, NRCan

Abstract: The Government of Canada has launched the development of a National Quantum Strategy, with an investment of $360M announced in the 2021 Federal Budget. The strategy is a seven year effort with three identified pillars: Research ($141M), Commercialization ($169M), and Talent ($45M). This strategy looks at the "new Quantum" - the newly developed ability to control single atom states and use this for practical applications.

The stated objectives are as follows:

Amplify Canada's significant strength in quantum research

Grow our quantum-ready technologies, companies and talent

Solidify Canada's global leadership in this area

Quantum technologies can be broken down to three application areas: Quantum Sensing and Metrology Instruments, Quantum Communications, and Quantum Computing. While there are likely several emerging quantum technologies of interest we will look at quantum-enhanced Sensing and Metrology Instruments, notably gravimeters and magnetometers. We will provide (non-technical) summaries of geoscience applications of these instruments and seek input from the Geophysics community on actions we might take as a community to support the National Quantum Strategy and reap scientific benefits from the introduction of these instruments.

Bio: Dr. Calvin Klatt is the Director of the Canadian Geodetic Survey and Chief Geodesist of the Government of Canada. As such, Calvin is one of Canada’s leaders in the areas of Positioning and Earth Sciences. The work of the Geodetic Survey is integrated into a wide range of scientific efforts and involves collaboration with a very wide range of stakeholders. Calvin is Canada’s representative to the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) Subcommittee on Geodesy and serves on the Subcommittee’s leadership Bureau. Previously Calvin has held positions as Assistant Chief Scientist of the Earth Sciences Sector (Natural Resources Canada), Program Manager for Natural Hazards (Earthquake, Space Weather, Landslide, Tsunami, Volcano), and Director of the NRCan Chief Scientist’s Office. Calvin has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Engineering Physics (Radio Astronomy), and a Doctorate in Space Science/Astronomy. He is an avid amateur astronomer and has made significant volunteer contributions to Canada’s national mountaineering organization, the Alpine Club of Canada.

Special Sessions (SS) and Post-Convention Workshops (PCW) are an integral and crucial part of the Annual Meeting Technical Program. SEG is now asking for proposals to be prepared and submitted.

For the Mining and Mineral Exploration Committee, please send an email of interest to Sarah Devriese and Dan Hollis by Wednesday November 15th and full proposals will be due to us by Monday December 4th. This gives us some time to review and edit before submitting to SEG.

For Special Session proposals, please provide title, sufficient synopsis, keywords, key contact name and email, tentative list of invited speakers. Note that Special Sessions are sessions exclusively for invited speakers.

For Post-Convention Workshop proposals, please provide title, sufficient synopsis (why, what, format), key contact name and email, duration (full day or ½ day). Please be reminded that PCWs are expected to cover different topics (or with different emphasis) from the regular technical program sessions.

KEGS Foundation Update

1. In August/September, the KEGS Foundation circulated three announcements describing the 2023/24 scholarship awards to 28 students studying at thirteen universities across Canada, comprising nine undergraduate, ten M.Sc. and nine Ph.D. students. A record amount of $50,100 was awarded. As always, donations are encouraged so that we can continue to increase the scholarship awards in the coming years, and support student participation in conferences and workshops.

KEGS May Talks - Triple Threat!

We have three KEGS talks happening this month. Two in Toronto and one in Ottawa.

Talk 1 - May 9th

Title: History of the discovery of two undercover VMS deposits near Flin-Flon

Speaker: Bob Lo

Abstract: The exploration history of the discovery of two VMS deposits beneath the Phanerozoic cover of the Flin Flon – Snow Lake volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) Belt in Manitoba and Saskatchewan is presented. Due to a lack of outcrops of the host rocks, geophysical exploration techniques were key to the discoveries. Both discoveries are attributed to geophysical techniques and both used arguably the best airborne electromagnetic technology at the time to detect the sulphide mineralization for ground follow-up and then drill testing. But it took many tries or near misses over a long period of time, either by other companies or by the discoverers in the same area before the discovery hole was drilled. The exploration history of the McIlvenna Bay Deposit and of the Reed Mine Deposit are presented to show the perseverance and geophysics required to find these deposits.

Talk 2 - May 23rd

Title: A Short History of HeliTEM

Abstract: While helicopter-supported TEM systems are now the dominant airborne EM technology for minerals exploration, this technology was a relative late comer to the constellation of airborne EM platforms. The first functional AEM systems appeared in the early 1950s and while some ambiguity has persisted to the present as to which technology was ‘first’, the first technically ‘capable’ system was built by Hans Lundberg in 1949 and the first commercially deployed system was the INCO-McPhar system that arrived in 1951. Both of these were frequency domain systems. The first helicopter frequency domain system was built by McPhar and was commissioned in 1955. Barringer then produced the first time domain system in 1959, which was of a fixed wing configuration. The first heli-TEM system was built in the USSR, with design and testing carried out in the late 1960s, followed by over a decade of operational use for minerals and petroleum exploration. The first Canadian system was built by Questor Ltd. in the early 1980s and was called Heli INPUT in recognition that the core EM technology was drawn from the INPUT technology first designed by Barringer. Heli INPUT operated for 4-5 years before technical issues and economic headwinds at the time forced Questor to terminate the Heli INPUT program. In the mid-later part of the 1980s, Aerodat worked on a multi-component system with the nickname “Truth’. With only limited test flying, in the late 1980s, the system was scrapped due to changing company priorities. Ironically, a very similar program was re-started in 1994 at Aerodat but this time with the support of a major mining company, MIM. Following a test flight of the HeliTEM system in 1997, again corporate challenges forced the sale of Aerodat to a competitor High-Sense and the HeliTEM program was terminated. Several years later, a tsunami of acquisitions occurred when Fugro bought up the majority of the global airborne survey businesses. However, three relatively small companies avoided being ‘shallowed’ and its turned out these three groups were the source of a ‘Burgess Shale’ event where in a short period from 1997-2002, three heli-TEM systems appeared in Canada and shortly thereafter in Denmark. As well, three proprietary systems appeared as the result of efforts by Newmont, Anglo American and Normandy. Now, 25 years later, the market has matured but new systems are still coming to market offering generally minor changes/improvements. While the heli-system market is basically stable, the fixed wing technology which dominated the industry for the first sixty years, has basically vanished. What the next 25/50 years (Third Wave) will offer remains unclear. However, the expectation is that like the first two waves, a few individuals will likely be the key innovators.

While there is a generally accepted model of disseminated sulfides giving rise to a chargeability response, no clear association has been attached to what EM surveys may be responding to. Work in the early 1990s (Nickson 1993) showed the well-developed supergene blankets over a porphyry copper could be conductive; this observation was however, never applied formally to generally accepted porphyry targeting models. The presence of other conductive zones associated with porphyry copper deposits is even less well studied. On the geological side, while there is a vast body of literature describing porphyry copper deposits and how to discover them, in very few cases do these studies even speculate if anomalous concentrations of sulfides could be conductive. On the geophysical side, observations of unexpected conductivity associated with porphyry systems is sometimes noted but these observations typically stop short of suggesting that there could be a more general observation made that a new class of geophysical feature should be defined. The present study is felt to have gathered a sufficient number of case studies which show that a significant number of porphyry copper deposits possess a mineralogical character which can be identified with EM techniques. This thesis can have significant implications as to how porphyry copper are explored for, especially those at depths >500 m, a generally accepted cut-off for IP techniques. This presentation is based on a similar talk given in AEGC 2019 in Australia. The talk has been updated several times since. We are not yet sure if we will be able to get back in to the GSC buildings for our meeting, but for now our back-up plan is to hold the May meeting at the SGL office on Hunt Club Rd.

We are starting our search for speaker suggestions and/or presentation volunteers for the 2023/2024 season. This is a great opportunity to try out or reprise a talk that you have given somewhere else. We are also always interested in student presentations. We can have either one 45 minute presentation or two 20 minute presentations per meeting.

SEGMIN - IMAGE 2023 Houston - Final Details

The Mining and Mineral Exploration technical program for the IMAGE 2023 Meeting in Houston on August 27 through September 1, 2023, has been finalized.

The MME technical program will consist of 24 MME presentations in four oral sessions, one poster session, and one special session. The four oral and one poster session are grouped as Integrated Studies for Mineral Prospectivity and Innovative Mineral Exploration Concepts and Technologies. The Special Session is focused on Use of Seismic Data for Critical Mineral Exploration.

The MME technical program will also include a workshop titled Advances in the Ground and Airborne Induced Polarization Methods for Mineral Exploration.

Finally, in addition to the above MME content, the EM and Potential Fields (EMP) technical program will consist of 24 presentations and the Near Surface (NS) technical program will consist of 40 presentations.

Abstract: Geonics Ltd. has recently designed and manufactured EM38-4; a new version of the most popular handheld electromagnetic (EM) instrument EM38. This new instrument has one transmitter and four receiver coils at distances of 0.5, 0.75, 0.88 and 1 m apart from transmitter. Transmitter coil is energized by an alternating electric current of 14.5 kHz and produces an alternating primary electromagnetic field. The magnetic component of this EM field penetrates to the subsurface and induces electric currents in it. These currents are proportional to electrical conductivity (EC) and magnetic susceptibility (MS) of the subsurface materials. All receivers have the ability to sense, simultaneously, in-phase and out of phase components of secondary magnetic field created by the induced currents. The instrument is connected to a tablet, which works in windows operating system and has a built-in GPS, via a cable where the data and position of each data point are recorded together. Although there are manual adjusting knobs on the instrument, calibration of all receivers can be automatically done using an appropriate software when the instrument is placed on a monopod 1.5 m above surface. Since the transmitter-receiver separations in EM38-4 are much less than skin depth of the electromagnetic wave of the transmitter, the in-phase and out of phase components are directly proportional to MS and EC of subsurface materials. Each receiver has also its own depth of penetration. So, the instrument can reveal apparent MS and EC of the ground under the measuring point at four different depths. This feature makes the instrument a proper and efficient tool for environmental and agricultural studies as well as archaeological and even near surface geophysical explorations. Inversion of recorded data are also possible where details of the subsurface are required.

We had the chance to borrow the instrument from Geonics Ltd., in September 2022 and test it over an agricultural land, located at Haldimand County in southern Ontario, to map variations of both MS and EC of soil by depth. Plotting the maps of measured MS and EC revealed a depressional area having high EC and low MS at all receivers. We also inverted the data using nonlinear Occam’s inversion method to calculate EC and MS variations with depth. Results of inverting the data showed that EM38-4 is more sensitive to EC than MS of materials under the instrument.

Abstract: Current events show that climate change is upon us. The mechanism of global warming was already explained fairly accurately by Arrhenius in 1896. An alternative to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by burning less fossil fuels is to capture CO2 and then store it in the subsurface. This technology relies on our expertise in injecting fluids in the subsurface and to monitor the fluids and their fate in the subsurface. This technology has been presented as "a well-accepted leading mitigation strategy against climate change.” In order to understand to what extent this optimism is warranted one needs to consider the following factors: (1) the amount of CO2 that needs to be captured and sequestered to have a significant impact on climate change, (2) the cost of CO2 capture and sequestration compared with other technologies for avoiding CO2 emissions, (3) the reason why CO2 capture is expensive and energy-intensive, and (4) the extreme accuracy with which CO2 in the subsurface needs to be monitored. As with many complicated problems, the devil is in the details, and we need to understand these details to assess the impact of carbon capture and storage that can be expected. This determines whether this technology is a panacea or an indulgence.

Abstract: With a large volume of potential case histories on its shelves, Simcoe decided to present examples from three modes of geophysical exploration projects, defined as primary, secondary and tertiary exploration projects.

The primary exploration example is from an orogenic gold property in Newfoundland – a province which has experienced a gold rush. 2D Alpha IP™ data are examined to show the level of detail and effectiveness possible in identifying 2 metre wide quartz-vein-hosted copper-gold-silver targets. The Alpha IP™ results led to economic discovery on the third drill hole -- a fast path to discovery on the project and a measure of the high targeting effectiveness for the technology.

The secondary exploration example is from an intrusive copper – gold property in the Yukon in a known copper belt. The purpose of Alpha IP™ surveys here was to follow up on previous year’s results from Simcoe by first correlating IP signatures over a defined resource at one of three pit areas, and then using these signatures to find extensions nearby. At least two new zones / extensions were found which contributed to the client’s goal of adding extra tons for a new upcoming resource estimate. There were also other new targets found.

The tertiary example is a blind example over desert sands in the vicinity of historic polymetallic VMS near-surface mining works at one of the reputed King Solomon’s Mines dating from the 10th century BC. In this example, we look at GRID 3D data from Alpha IP™, showing survey layout, a huge number of data points, and ultimately resolution of an extensive target that is now being mined to depths of over 1000 m. Targeting effectiveness was over 70% based on the high definition results with the GRID 3D Alpha IP™ survey.

In summary, the presentation shows three case histories in some detail with the goal for the audiences to evaluate geophysical exploration methods and technology effectiveness at three sites that are distinct for exploration paradigm, mineralization and target dimensions. As part of the discussion, there will be a modest introduction to Simcoe Geosciences’ IP systems with a more detailed examination of survey layouts and other parameters during presentation of the three case studies.

Bio: Greg graduated with a Bachelors in 1986 and a Masters in 1991, both in Engineering Geophysics, from Queens University and later from York University in Communications in 1995. He has been active since in geophysics and with new technologies, starting with the first GPR system from A-Cubed in 1985 and BHP’s novel physical property logging system (1986 to 1991). As well, he has worked at the leading edge of other advanced technologies, including cellular networking, earth science software, geophysical instrumentation, and ground, airborne and borehole geophysical surveys. He continues today with the next generation Alpha IP™ survey technology at Simcoe Geoscience. Greg has held senior positions as Chief Geophysicist at Nuvia Dynamics; Vice President of Sales at Quantec; Vice President of Marketing at the former Geosoft, where he branded and launched Oasis Montaj; and as Director of Sales and Marketing at GEM Systems, where he launched GEM’s advanced potassium magnetometer technology in 2002 as well as its first-to-market drone magnetic technology in 2007 (Halifax, NS). Currently, he is Senior Vice President and Executive Geophysicist at Simcoe Geoscience with responsibility for helping to lead the company’s drive in leveraging next-generation geophysical surveys to make economic ore discoveries for a rapidly growing list of clients and agencies.

Various tributes and memorials are in preparation or being actively considered by former colleagues.
Scholarship award presentations continued in December, with awards presented at the KEGS meeting on December 13 and at the SGL-hosted holiday gathering on Dec 19, including presentation of the premier Collett Graduate Scholarship to Fateme Ghalati, PhD candidate at Carleton University. Directors have enjoyed various opportunities to meeting awardees and supporters at revived in-person meetings.
Presentations of remaining current scholarships are being arranged at Western (Robert Hearst, January 17) and Queen’s (Bruce McMonnies, late January).
Renewal of the scholarship program for 2023-24 is expected to be announced in January, with at least 25 scholarship awards anticipated.

Passing of Norm Paterson

KEGS Executives extends their condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Norm Paterson. Norman Reed Paterson passed away peacefully with his children and companion by his side on December 22nd, 2022, at the age of 96. Norm was a founding member of KEGS in 1953 and is known worldwide for his innovations in geophysical technology and skilled practice of geophysical techniques and interpretation.

A memorial service of Norman’s life will take place at the St. George’s Anglican Church in Clarksburg, Ontario, on February 11th, 2023 at 1 o’clock., with a reception following. More information can be found in Norm's obituary.

The geophysical community lost a giant on December 22, 2022 when Norm Paterson passed away, a month short of his 97th birthday. Norm’s remarkable career spanned a range of techniques and a number of companies that built strong legacies, with contributions to the full exploration cycle from instrument development to interpretation. He touched and influenced a number of prominent geophysicists along the way, in Canada and worldwide.

Norman Reed Paterson was an outstanding member of the small group of geophysicists who, after World War Two, generated the surge in geophysical developments and activity which propelled Canadian geophysics into world leadership. Norm was born in London, England to Canadian parents. He and his brothers moved to Canada with their mother in 1939 before Norm enlisted in the British military in 1943, at the age of 17. After WWII, he returned to Canada in 1947 and attended the University of Toronto, graduating with a B.Sc. in Engineering Geophysics in 1950, and continuing his education by earning an M.Sc. at the University of British Columbia in 1952, followed by a Ph.D. from Toronto in 1955, where he was one of Tuzo Wilson’s first post-war graduate students.

Norm’s first working experience in geophysics was as a seismologist in hydrocarbon exploration, However, he spent most of his distinguished career in geophysics applied to mining exploration. He participated in or was responsible for the discovery of more than twenty commercial or potentially commercial ore deposits in Canada and in many other parts of the world.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1955, he began his career with Dominion Gulf in Toronto. He then joined Hunting Survey Corp. in Toronto as Chief Geophysicist. There he managed ground and airborne geophysical surveys in Canada and in many other countries. In 1964. he formed Huntec Limited, which rapidly gained a reputation as a leading manufacturer of geophysical instruments, as well as a skilled consulting and contracting company in geophysical surveys. In 1970, he left Huntec to form a consultancy, which in 1973 became Paterson, Grant & Watson Limited, joining with other well-known geophysicists Dr. Fraser Grant (1926-1984) and Roger Watson (1936-2021). PGW rapidly became a world leader in geophysical consulting and project management for mineral exploration. Within PGW, as it was universally known, recognizing the growing importance of computer applications, he established Geosoft Inc. headed by Ian Macleod, which is now a division of Bentley Systems and the dominant world supplier of software for processing and interpreting geophysical and geochemical data.

Norm’s career at PGW and earlier took him across the world. He had a particular affinity for contributing his knowledge and expertise in the developing world, across Africa, India and elsewhere, with involvement in many projects funded by CIDA. Although his reputation usually preceded him, admiration by other geoscientists only grew once they experienced direct interaction. He was a mentor to and collaborator with multiple generations of geophysicists from the start of his career and his influence and inspiration endure. Norm’s published technical contributions approached eighty, including seminal journal articles.

Norm retired from full-time practice in 1995, handing the reins of PGW to long-time associate Jim Misener, but continued in consulting. Like many in the profession, he once said that geophysics was so interesting that he could not contemplate leaving it, even in retirement, and he was always interested in discussing new developments with visiting former colleagues.

His contributions to the geophysical industry have been recognized in several significant ways. In 1997, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, citing his work in the geological interpretation of magnetic surveys. In 1999, he was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame, where his citation in part reads, “Paterson has been praised the world over for the sound balance he achieved between the practical, applied science of geophysics and his professionalism and integrity. No matter where in the world his assignments took him, he always served as an excellent ambassador for the Canadian mining industry.” He was recognized as a notable pioneer by the KEGS Foundation As Dr. Gordon West wrote in a dedication, “Norman Paterson exemplifies the combination of technical understanding and prowess with professional competence and management skill that makes geophysics succeed. His career is one that can be held up to students to show them how individuals can make science and technology have a positive benefit for society.”

In retirement, Norm moved to a farm near Clarksburg, Ontario and later had a home in Thornbury on the shores of Lake Huron. He and his wife wintered with family in Costa Rica. At the age of 93, Norm’s breadth and depth of experience made him uniquely qualified to write the book “Mining Geophysics: A Canadian Story”, aided by a number of noted collaborators and contributors, and published by the CIM. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to appreciate the developments, events and key innovators and contributors that gave rise to Canada’s becoming a global leader in geophysics and mining exploration during the 1945-1975 period. Remarkably, turning his diverse talents to fiction, he subsequently wrote three mystery novels, some set in his beloved Georgian Bay, as well as devoting considerable effort to pursuing possible alternative causes of global warming.

Bill Scott, a noted early collaborator, offered the following reminiscence: I first had the privilege of working for Norm Paterson at Hunting Survey Corp. after my first undergraduate year, in the summer of 1959. It was an exciting summer which confirmed my interest in becoming a geophysicist. In addition to infecting me and my fellow summer students with his enthusiasm, Norm taught us a great deal about the importance of high-quality data, and about the need to understand the meaning of what we were finding. I can still remember a discussion with him on the implication of the number of significant figures in a number (measurement), a lesson I never forgot. Over the years, I have worked on other programs for and with Norm and remember them as greatly enjoyable and instructive times.

Stephen Reford reminisced: I had the honour of working for and with Norm at PGW from 1981 until his retirement. He conducted himself with professionalism, dedication and grace, and instilled these qualities in his employees and colleagues. I recall a field trip with Norm to Burkina Faso in the mid-80’s, part of a CIDA geophysical interpretation project to assess mineral potential. It was focused on ground truthing aeromagnetic anomalies, first proving their location in the days prior to GPS and secondly, hoping to find an outcrop amongst the dark red soil characteristic of the Sahel. This remains the toughest field work of my career due to the extreme heat and gastrointestinal disagreements with the local cuisine. Norm soldiered on as leader of the team. Partway through a traverse, we settled under a large tree for a break from the heat. It was located in a field outside a local village. Soon after, a small delegation from the village brought water for our group. An elder presented Norm with a live pintade, which I think is French for scrawny chicken. Norm accepted this gift as a deep sign of respect from one elder to another, and later gifted it to the local geophysicist who was guiding us. After we completed the project, of his own volition Norm dug back into the data, extracting numerous examples and published an article to show how these data could be applied to groundwater exploration, a sorely needed resource in the Sahel.

In dealing with the inevitable major demands on his time and energy in undertaking global geophysical projects and managing Huntec and then PGW, Norm was greatly aided by his wife of nearly 70 years, Sally, who predeceased him in 2018. They met at the University of Toronto and shared an affinity for travel, sailing and other outdoor pursuits. He was a devoted and attentive father to his four children, Catherine, John, Michael and Norman Jr., who have all had interesting careers, together with their spouses. He was a much-loved grandfather and great-grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In his final years, Norm became companions with author Dorris Heffron, moving into her lovely home in the Beaver Valley. There will be a memorial service for Norm at St. George's Anglican Church in Clarksburg, Ontario on February 11 at 1 p.m. Norm was to be the Guest of Honour at PGW’s 50th anniversary celebration on March 6 during the PDAC Conference. Now it will be an opportunity to celebrate the legacy of a remarkable geophysicist and person who was a key contributor to the world-renowned expertise of Canadian mineral explorationists.

Title: An Update on Two SQUID-based Airborne Technologies

Abstract: Dias has been working with Supracon AG over the last 5 years to develop a SQUID-based passive source airborne electromagnetic survey system. This system, named QAMT is now commercially-available. QAMT measures three orthogonal components of the magnetic field. The sensor platform is mechanically damped and residual motion is characterized with an IMU in order to deliver low-noise, oriented 3-component data. Using a base station, we are able to deliver tipper, apparent resistivity, and inversion models.

Two years ago, Dias deployed the QMAGT system, which is an established technology that delivers full tensor magnetic gradiometry (FTMG) data. FTMG provides the directional information that improves the interpretation of remanence and source geometry. The low temperature SQUID sensors produce highly sensitive and accurate data that improves resolution. Applications to date have been in exploration for diamondiferous kimberlites, nickel, iron ore, and gold. Dias will be deploying a second QMAGT system early in 2023.

Bio: Jonathan Rudd is a professional engineer and geophysicist who has over 30 years of experience in the application of borehole, ground and airborne geophysical methods to geological challenges. Jonathan has worked in senior management for the last 12 years with a principal focus on technology development and business development. He is a past-president of the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society, and is currently President and Director of Dias.

Heather worked for Aurora Geosciences and MMG Ltd before joining BHP’s Resource Centre of Excellence group in 2017 as Global Principal Geoscientist, Seismic Geophysics.

After 30 years of compiling the Mineral Exploration Trends & Developments Review, Pat Killeen has decided to retire. On behalf of everyone in our community, KEGS would like to thank him for the outstanding job he has done. This year marks the 59th edition of the trends review and Sean Walker has stepped up as the new editor.

All of the details needed to submit to the ETD 2023 are in the attached pdf. This includes instructions on what, when and where to submit company news regarding “NEW” mineral exploration technology developments in 2022.

The deadline for submission is Monday, 28 November 2022. Submissions are digital only.

DMEC are the primary patron of ETD and will provide details about possible sponsorship for the 2023 ETD in the near future. Please contact Ken Witherly for more information.

In previous years a set of tables regarding geophysical instrumentation and survey providers were compiled and updated. The tables will not be updated this year (we are thinking about how they will continue in the future), however, the tables (and a copy of ETD 2022) can be downloaded from the KEGS website here.

Title: Application of Magnetotelluric in Geothermal Exploration

Abstract: Interest in geothermal exploration as an alternative source of energy is rising around the world as well as in Canada. Mapping structures of a geothermal reservoir is a necessary task to understand the fluid flow regime and viability of the reservoir. Magnetotelluric (MT) methods, are a subset of electromagnetic (EM) exploration techniques and are commonly used in geothermal studies. An audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) survey was conducted to explore for shallow geothermal resources in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt, Canada, the location of which has the highest geothermal potential in Canada. In this talk, the potential geothermal reservoir at the Mount Meager Volcanic Complex (MMVC) will be reviewed. A detailed near surface electrical resistivity model of the MMVC region will be presented to 3-D image the reservoir zones accounting for the steep mountain topography. The results will support the broader goals of reducing the economic risks of geothermal exploration in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt.

Bio: Fateme is a Ph.D. candidate in geophysics at Carleton University. She earned her B.Sc. in mining exploration engineering in 2014 and M.Sc. in petroleum exploration engineering in 2016 from the University of Tehran. After her M.Sc. studies, she gained 2+ years of work experience in a consulting company as a petrophysicist, studying petrophysical data and well logs of different reservoirs. She is currently involved in the Garibaldi Geothermal Volcanic Belt Assessment Project with the Geological Survey of Canada and is a teacher and research assistant at Carleton University. Her PhD thesis focus on the use of magnetotellurics to define shallow crustal fluid systems and geothermal reservoirs, insights from Garibaldi Volcanic Belt, BC, Canada.

PDAC EM Mini-Symposium Announcement and Call for Abstracts

KEGS is excited to announce a mini symposium focused on the electromagnetic (EM) method is planned for Saturday June 11th 2022. It will be held in person in Toronto, Canada the weekend preceding the Prospectors and Developers Association Convention. A social event will follow the symposium.

Theme

Electromagnetic (EM) methods have been a mainstay in exploration geophysics for over 50 years and continue to be a vital tool in applied geoscience. As EM systems have increased in power, complexity, and resolution jointly with vastly improved data processing and visualization tools, their application has extended well beyond the bump-hunters of old. The mini symposium aims to provide a snapshot of recent advances and applications of the EM method to geoscience problems.

The event will comprise a series of invited and solicited talks. At this time, KEGS is soliciting abstract submissions for a limited number of talks on the following topics:

Advances in EM acquisition, data processing and modelling
Case histories of EM in mineral exploration
Application of EM to non-exploration geoscience problems

Title: New Developments on Data Acquisition Technology for Identifying Base and Precious Metals
Speaker: Alexandre Coutu
Date: Tuesday April 12th at 4:00 PM EDT

Abstract: In this talk, a potential mining site surveyed by two different mediums - traditional fixed wing aircraft and a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) will be reviewed. The total magnetic intensity survey performance of a fully electric aeromagnetic long-range remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) will be compared to a previously flown survey from a traditional aeromagnetic fixed wing aeroplane (Navajo PA-31). The vertical takeoff and landing fixed wing RPAS used a single externally mounted magnetometer system for the total magnetic intensity survey while the traditional aircraft utilized an onboard magnetometer. From the survey results, we’ll take a deep dive into the resolution of the system, the sampling frequency, the speed of the survey, the distance, and the greenhouse gas emissions. Based on the experimental results, we will investigate the benefits of the substitute RPAS data acquisition platform over traditional airborne surveying methods.

Bio: Alexandre Coutu completed his undergraduate education in electrical engineering at Ryerson University with a focus on drone research and development where he was a part of and led the award-winning university drone team, Ryerson Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, from 2017 - 2021. Alexandre and his team developed state of the art fixed-wing vertical take-off and landing drone systems to expand upon the regular capabilities of RPAS within industry. In addition to his studies and research, he was a member of Ryerson’s zones - iBoost and the Design Fabrication Zone - to develop a business around the newly created tech. Upon finishing his undergraduate degree in 2020, he spent the following two years as a co-founder of Rosor, a geophysical surveying company, with his team to further develop specialized long-range systems with industry partners specifically for geophysical applications. Alexandre is particularly interested in applying novel drone surveying technology to the next big mining discovery.

March usually brings two things - the arrival of spring in northern latitudes, and the annual KEGS Symposium. For 2022, the symposium "Geophysical Advances: Case Studies and New Techniques" will be a virtual event comprising four session in late March.

Ed passed on Saturday January 22, 2022.Our hearts go out to Ed’s family at this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts.

Ed’s funeral will be held on Friday, January 28th at Taylor Funeral home, Newmarket. Public visitation will start at. 11:30am .

Title: More EM myths and Old-fashioned Methods.

Speaker: Greg Hodges, Senior Geophysicist at Sander Geophysics.

Abstract: There are a few myths about EM held by many people that deserve study. Some of them are a result of limited experience with either time or frequency domain EM, or limited experience with multiple geological environments. Other misconceptions come from thinking that the two different mathematical models, time domain and frequency-domain, make things happen differently in the earth. Don’t ever think that the model defines the earth – it only attempts to imitate it.

Are time domain EM and frequency domain EM the same thing, or different? The answer is: “Yes”. The earth is not frequency domain. The arrow of time is not oscillatory. But it is important to recognize that what you will see from the earth depends on how you look at it. The nature of the response depends on how you energize the earth and how you measure the response.

Debunking other myths: Current rings propagate downward with time, but that doesn’t always mean that depth correlates to time of the response. Calculating new parameters from the same data is not adding new information. B-field from a coil is not really B-field. In-phase is real, but on-time is not in-phase. Bandwidth is about more than electronics. FDEM has IP effects. Levelling EM data damages the EM data quality.
Sometimes a pencil and paper (and your brain) can do a better job of modeling than the best computer.

Biography: Greg Hodges is a Senior Geophysicist at Sander Geophysics. Since 1980 his career has included most types of mineral exploration geophysics, with a strong concentration on electromagnetic methods. His career experience has been relatively equally divided between time-domain and frequency-domain EM, and between airborne and ground (including borehole). He's worked as a ground geophysical contractor, in junior and major mining companies, and (for the last 26 years) for airborne geophysical survey companies in R&D and applications development. Along the way he's had the good fortune to do development work with some of the leading practical experts in both time- and frequency-domain EM.

KEGS extends condolences on the passing of Bob Middleton.

KEGS Executives extent their condolences to all his family members, friends and colleagues of Bob Middleton, a legendary mineral explorationist in Ontario and geophysicist by profession. An endowed chair at Lakehead University is being set up in Bob’s name.

KEGS condolences on passing away Bob Middleton

It is with great sadness and sorrow to announce that Bob Middleton, a legendary mineral explorationist in Ontario and geophysicist by profession, has passed away. KEGS Executives extent their condolences to all his family members, friends and colleagues.

Bob's funeral is scheduled for Thursday, November 25 at 11am at Sargent & Son in Thunder Bay, ON. A lunch will follow the service at the funeral home.

Sargent & Son requires that attendees have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine and that at least 14 days have passed since their second dose. Identification is also required.

A virtual viewing of the service will be available on the Sargent & Son Facebook page as well as on Google (please search for Sargent & Son Funeral Home).

Title: Deep Learning as an alternative to downward continuation filters for structural interpretation

Speaker: Jean-Philippe Paiement, P.Geo., M.Sc. – Director, Global Consulting - Mira Geoscience

Abstract: Oftentimes when working with regional magnetic surveys from multiple sources, we encounter resolution continuity issues, which makes 2D interpretation more challenging. The loss in resolution of anomalies borders and lack of texture in the gridded data, can cause issues to the interpreter. This talk sets the basis of using currently available deep learning architecture to train a model for special resolution enhancement.
Recent advancement in image processing and deep learning have led to the development of neural networks capable of increasing images resolution using and adversarial learning strategy (Wang, X et al., 2018). In this deep learning model, available high-resolution grids with their low-resolution counter parts are used to train an encoder-decoder network to reconstruct the high-resolution from their starting point. Once the network is sufficiently trained it is then possible to apply it to upscale low-resolution images without existing ground truth high resolution counter part. This approach uses Generative Adversarial Networks or GAN’s, a relatively new class of machine learning frameworks designed in 2014 (Goodfellow, I. et al). A generator network is used to construct images that are then passed through a discriminator network which tries to discriminate between real images and fake images produced by the generator. Given a training set, this technique learns to generate higher resolution data with the same statistics as the training set.
Once the general model is trained on high-resolution/low-resolution pairs, it is possible to refine it to the area of interest and use it to upscale low resolution survey patches. This will help in refining anomaly edges and increase the accuracy of the structural interpretation conducted by the geologist. This approach is proposed as an alternative to the commonly used downward continuation filters used in the industry.

Biography: Jean-Philippe Paiement is the Director of Global Consulting at Mira Geoscience Ltd. He brings 15 years of mineral exploration experience to the table, including expertise in geostatistics applied to structural, geological, and geochemical modelling and interpretation; specializing in non-linear interpolation and simulation. Jean-Philippe has developed multiple workflow and novel approaches to reduce interpretational risks of geological data. Jean-Philippe has a wide range of experience in mineral resource estimation for precious metals, base metals and industrial minerals across diverse geological environments around the world. In 2016, Jean-Philippe has pioneered the application of Machine Learning to the mineral exploration industry in winning the Integra GoldRush challenge by application of machine learning to mineral deposit targeting. He is skilled in the application of machine learning to overcome geological and geophysical challenges; by combining geological knowledge and both supervised learning and deep learning. Before joining Mira Geoscience, he obtained an MSc from Laval University. Jean-Philippe is based in Quebec-City.

Cependant, plusieurs gisements métallifères sont directement associés à réponses d’aimantation rémanente.Des liens directs peuvent être faits entre l’aimantation rémanente la mise en place de certains types de gisement métallifère et pourraient même servir d’outil en exploration minière. Cette présentation fait un survol rapide de ce concept à partir de réflexions personnelles et d’exemples..

Biographie :
L’auteur, M. Marc Boivin est géophysicien consultant avec MB Géosolutions depuis 2006. Il a travaillé comme chef géophysicien pour SOQUEM entre 1993 et 2006, géophysicien d’exploration pour WMC entre 1990 et 1993 et géophysicien de terrain pour Sagax Géophysique entre 1985 et 1990.M. Boivin a étudié aux études supérieures à l’École Polytechnique de Montréal en géophysique entre 1984 et 1985, après avoir complété un B.Sc. en géologie à UQAM en 1983. Il est membre de l’OGQ, PGO et APEGNB.

Title: Yaouré Gold Mine 3D seismic case history and recent hard rock processing and interpretation

Abstract: 3D seismic reflection is gaining acceptance as a tool for accelerating the discovery of additional resources within mineralized environments. In this talk we will show how this is being achieved at the Yaouré Gold Mine in Côte d’Ivoire. In addition, we will show some of the new approaches that are being applied both to:
1. Obtain higher fidelity images which more clearly and accurately represent the subsurface geology; and
2. Derive more intuitive volume-based interpretations showing the 3D distribution of key rock units.

Biography:

Andy has spent the last 33 years involved in deploying seismic technology all over the planet , 24 years with Schlumberger in the UK, Libya , South Africa , USA , Venezuela, Australia and Canada. 5 years with TGS Canada in a variety of multi-client roles and now with HiSeis in a BD role based from Canada with North America as his area of responsibility. Andy graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Geological Sciences from Leeds University in 1988.

Dr Greg Turner – General Manager Technical Services , HiSeis
Greg has a Bachelor of Earth Science, BSc(Hons) 1987 from Monash University. He has also completed doctoral studies at Macquarie University being awarded a PhD in 1994. Prior to joining HiSeis, Greg was Geoscience Manager at WMCs Technology Group and he was also a co-founder of geophysical services company, Geoforce. Greg has been a Principal Geophysicist and Director of New Business Development at HiSeis prior to his appointment to the position of General Manager Technical Services

Modular course on Exploration Geophysics

Every second December, The Mineral Exploration Research Centre at Laurentian University presents a modular course on Exploration Geophysics. This year the course will be held December 8-17 in the Executive Learning Centre, room FA-386 of the Fraser building on Laurentian’s Sudbury campus. The course can be taken by graduate students for credit towards their degree programs, or by professionals, in which case it can be counted towards the hours required for continuing education by professional registration organizations like the PGO. This year, professionals can sign up at a reduced rate if they participate in the lectures remotely and on-line.

The course is intended for geologists and geophysicists and will cover all aspects of geophysical methods: theory, instrumentation, acquisition, processing, display and interpretation. The methods covered and the case histories presented will be focused on mineral exploration.

Retention in Geoscience Survey by Women Geoscientists in Canada

For a long time, there's been talk about leaky pipelines, the need for diversity, and thinking about the future of geoscience. But finding data has been tricky. WGC has created a survey to gain insight on retention in the geosciences.
Although this survey has been put forth by the Women Geoscientists in Canada, it is intended to explore the factors involved in retention, regardless of gender and location, so please share widely with your friends and colleagues, especially if you know people that have left the geoscience profession.

Presentation of Scholarship Awards: The Foundation announced in August the awarding of 27 scholarships for the upcoming academic year (2021\22), comprising 12 awards to undergraduates, 7 to M.Sc. students and 8 to Ph.D. candidates), totaling a record $38,000. On September 21, the following awards were presented in person at the special KEGS Ottawa meeting hosted by Sander Geophysics:

o Taylor Tracey Kyryliuk – M.Sc./Ph.D., University of Ottawa – KEGS Foundation Scholarship

During the upcoming KEGS Meeting (on Oct 12), four University of Toronto students will be awarded their scholarships:

Michael and Patricia Carson Geophysics Scholarship for Indigenous Students: At the abovementioned KEGS Ottawa meeting, Ray Guerard, B.Sc. student at the University of Manitoba, participated via Zoom and was presented the inaugural Carson Scholarship for Indigenous Students to an in-person and online audience of supporters and K-O members. Ray discussed his interest in the geosciences since childhood and the current research programs he is involved in. Patricia Carson gave a moving speech regarding the reasons why she and her late husband Mike decided to establish the scholarship. She and Paul Strandberg shared remembrances of Mike, who passed away in August. Details of the award to Mr. Guerard are attached here

To honour Mikel Carson, more than thirty friends and family have donated to the endowment for the Carson Scholarship for Indigenous Students. We thank them for their extraordinary generosity and support of the Carson family and legacy.
Bourse des pionniers de la géophysique québécoise: The inaugural award of this scholarship will soon be presented to Adrien Dimech, Ph.D. candidate at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue. We encourage further donations to the endowment, especially by those who want to sustain a vibrant geophysical community in the province and/or to honour the many pioneers from the academic and industry cohorts.

Abstract: Microseismic monitoring technology plays a critical role in measuring impact of excavation processed in the Mining sector as well as hydraulic fracturing performance for unconventional resources in Oil and Gas industry. However, despite the large investment in data acquisition Exploration and Production (E&P) companies struggle to make sense of their microseismic data with quick turn-around.
We believe that the rise of AI augmented analytics empowers E&P companies to measure data quality, recognize data correlations, and generate actionable insights that are critical in achieving operational efficiency and future cost and time savings. In this presentation we showcase enabling AI technologies that are game changers when it comes to microseismic data quality control, data analytics, and interpretation.

Biography: Dr. Ellie Ardakani is a published geoscientist and award-wining energy-tech entrepreneur with a proven development history of novel workflows to facilitate data analytics, visualization, and integrated interpretation. She is currently the CEO of Meta Innovation Technologies, an innovative technology company focused on increasing data analytics ROI and technical staff performance. Prior to Meta, she worked in various roles at IOOC, Athabasca Oil Corporation, and ESG Solutions. Ellie holds a PhD in Exploration Geophysics from the University of Alberta. Ellie is the chair of SEG Women’s Network, Women in AI Canada - Ottawa city lead, mentor at Mentoring365 program, a SEG SEAM product manager, an active member of EAGE, and a licensed professional geoscientist (P.Geo.) under APEGA.

UPDATE:

Record Scholarship Awards Announced: The Foundation announced the awarding of 27 scholarships for the upcoming academic year (2021\22), comprising 12 awards to undergrads, 7 to MSc students and 8 to PhD candidates), totaling a record $38,000. This record funding and increased awards to graduate students reflect the Directors’ focus on extending greater support to students in geophysics after a very challenging year, as university instruction and academic life slowly return to more normal practices and conditions, and was achieved by redeploying income from the Collett Legacy gift for programs that had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. Details can be found in the recent announcements posted on the Foundation’s website.
Carson Scholarship for Indigenous Students Established: As announced with considerable excitement in early July, the Foundation has established a new scholarship for an indigenous student in geophysics or geophysical technology attending a Canadian university or college, thanks to the major donation by Michael and Patricia Carson, augmented by a number of additional donations in honour of Mike’s life and career, reflecting recent heightened interest in addressing years of neglect and abuse exemplified by the residential school tragedy. The Foundation was also very pleased to announce the inaugural recipient, Ray Guerard, an excellent student in geophysics entering his second year at the University of Manitoba and a Métis with connections to the Ebb and Flow community on Lake Winnipeg, with the award likely presented at a hybrid event in Ottawa in late September.
Bourse Québécoise: Inaugural Award; Donations encouraged: A number of individuals and companies have previously expressed support for this new scholarship, which honours notable members of the Québec geophysics community, leading to its establishment earlier this spring, as previously announced. We encourage all supporter of this initiative to crystallize their donations in conjunction with the inaugural award of this scholarship to Adrien Dimech, PhD candidate at Université du Québec à Abitibi-Témiscamingue, who is developing improved electrical techniques for characterizing and monitoring mine waste and tailings. Donations may be made by cheque or PayPal to the KEGS Foundation indicating it is intended for the ‘Bourse des pionniers de la géophysique québecoise’. SEG Foundation scholarships awarded to 12 Canadians, including 4 KF lauréats: The Foundation are pleased to note that the SEG Foundation has awarded scholarships to 12 Canadian students, including four current or prior KEGS Foundation awardees. In particular, Kaiitlyn de Moree van Lierde has also received a renewal of the KEGS\Hallof Scholarship originally established by KEGS in 1998.
Developing Careers in Geophysics: There has been a burst of activity in online seminars and panels aimed at students and early career geophysicists, and geoscientists in general. The Foundation supported the excellent presentation by Nadine Veilette of Abitibi Geophysics as part of the EMinar series, at which she presented her perspectives, experiences and advice from a mid-career standpoint. We are anticipating additional new careers panels aimed at geophysicists in the coming months.
Transitioning to the ‘New Normal’: Along other organizations, institutions and communities, the Foundation is moving forward cautiously to adapt to a less restricted professional and personal environment as the fall advances (although this may be delayed by the surge in Delta variant Covid-19 cases), and in that regard is giving consideration to restoration of educational programs that were cancelled in April, 2020, such as the KEGS Special Lectures and the Collett Visiting Lectureship, which will enable greater interaction with students and colleagues.
2021 Steers Bursary Award: Congratulations are extended to Nicole Freij, a fourth year undergrad in the Earth Sciences Dept. at the UofT, as the 2021 recipient of the John E. Steers Bursary awarded to an outstanding geoscience student focused on a career in mineral exploration and administered jointly by the KEGS Foundation and the Canadian Mineral Industry Exploration Foundation (CMIEF).

KEGS Foundation Announces Record Graduate Scholarships Awarded for 2021/22

Record Graduate Scholarships Awarded for 2021/22

August 16, 2021, Toronto, Canada: The Directors of the KEGS Foundation are very pleased to announce the awarding of a record 15 scholarships totalling $19,500 (plus travel bursaries) to seven M.Sc. and eight Ph.D. graduate students in geophysics at twelve Canadian universities for the forthcoming academic year (2021/22).

These awards, complementing scholarships awarded to twelve undergraduates announced earlier, mark the twenty-second year of the KEGS Foundation’s scholarship program directed at fostering the education of future geophysicists in Canada. The large number of recipients and the record level of total scholarship funding ($38,000) reflect the number of well-qualified applicants and evident financial need, exacerbated by significant complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected many students’ studies, research, internships and jobs. The Foundation has endeavoured to respond positively to the applicants’ circumstances in order to sustain students’ focus on their geophysical education and research, redeploying income from the Collett legacy endowment that was not required for other programs in 2020/21.

Remarkably, despite the severe and diverse impacts of the now-receding pandemic, thanks to notable donations, continued support by sustaining donors and collective initiatives, the Foundation also succeeded in establishing three new scholarships in the past year:

SKGS Scholarship, primarily directed to supporting students in or from Saskatchewan
Bourse des pionniers de la géophysique québecoise, principally supporting students in or from Québec
Michael and Patricia Carson Geophysics Scholarship for Indigenous Students (just announced), for Indigenous students studying geophysics or geophysical technology.

It is with profound regret and sadness that we learned of Michael Carson’s recent passing, so soon after he and Patricia established the above-mentioned scholarship. We extend our condolences to Mike’s family and friends, and thank them for the many donations in his memory.

The eight Ph.D. candidates who received scholarship support to assist in completing their significant research include the fourth award of the premier Collett Graduate Scholarship, the thirteenth award of the GSC Pioneers Scholarship and the inaugural award of the new Bourse des pionniers de la géophysique québecoise. They were selected after careful consideration of a roster of impressively talented candidates. The outstanding awardees, are:

Tianshi Liu, University of Toronto, the recipient of the Collett Graduate Scholarship, is developing advances in full-wave seismic tomography applied to mantle and core characterization;

Gang Hui, University of Calgary, who received the GSC Pioneers Scholarship, is undertaking a very ambitious effort to integrate petrophysical characterization of fracture propagation for hydrocarbon exploitation and other applications;

Adrien Dimech, Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, is the inaugural recipient of the Bourse des pionniers de la géophysique québecoise. He is investigating and developing advanced ERT methods for monitoring and characterizing mine waste and tailings dumps;

Fatemeh Nemati, University of Victoria, recipient of the second BCGS Scholarship, is modelling tsunami generation and potential impacts on communities along coastal BC.

The other four Ph.D. candidates awarded scholarships intended to complement departmental funding are:

Jefferson Restrepo, Polytechnique Montréal, who is investigating specialized processing of marine seismic data to delineate permafrost;

Megan Caston, University of Alberta, who is beginning her Ph.D. studies focused on utilizing MT to delineate crustal properties on southern Vancouver Island;

Eric Lenhart, Western University, who is commencing research focused on determining the electrical conductivity of the Fe-Ni system under ultra-high pressure and temperature related to the earth’s core and geodynamics;

Erkan Gun, University of Toronto, who is undertaking numerical modeling of the tectonics of earthquake-prone zones, particularly in Turkey.

The amount of each scholarship award, intended to complement other funding, ranges from $500 to $3,000, determined by the recipient’s merit and need and available financial resources, while maintaining the Foundation’s principal objective of supporting undergraduate education.

In addition, thanks to continuing generous support by KEGS, all of the above awardees will also receive free membership in KEGS and will be eligible for fully subsidized participation at the annual KEGS Symposium in March. All recipients are also be strongly encouraged to participate in meetings of KEGS, BCGS or other local professional societies, and in other relevant geophysical meetings or symposia. Depending on need, circumstances and the Foundation’s resources, additional assistance with travel expenses up to $400 are tentatively allocated to facilitate participation of recipients and other applicants at relevant meetings, including KEGS or BCGS events, during the coming academic year. Networking opportunities will be offered where possible. Additionally, to assist awardees seeking to pursue further studies, research or employment, their CVs will be posted on the Foundation’s website.

Presentation of the scholarship awards will be arranged during the fall semester, preferably at professional meetings or in conjunction with KEGS Special Lectures on relevant geophysical topics hosted by university departments, or at equivalent virtual events, depending on the extent to which complications and restrictions due to COVID-19 pandemic are relaxed.

The Directors extend their best wishes to all the above recipients for further success in their studies and future careers. We also offer our gratitude for the continuing support of the Foundation and its scholarship program by the Canadian exploration and geophysical community, including renewed major support by KEGS and the BCGS, a recent very generous donation by Lamontagne Geophysics, and to Phoenix Geophysics for its continuing support of the matching donation program (see website for further details).

Michael and Patricia Carson Geophysics Scholarship for Indigenous Students Announcement, Description and Inaugural Award

The KEGS Foundation announce that, thanks to a substantial donation by Michael and Patricia Carson, it is establishing a scholarship to be awarded annually to an Indigenous student who is pursuing post-secondary studies in geophysics or geophysical technology at a Canadian university or college. It forms part of the Foundation’s evolving efforts to advance geophysical education in Canada.

In making this important donation, the Carsons wish to establish a scholarship for Indigenous students is to help ensure they have opportunities to study geophysics and develop careers, bringing needed Indigenous perspective into this field. More about the scholarship and the first recipient: here

Unfortunately Mike passed away peacefully of ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease on August 5 2021, his family at his side. Michael spent more than 35 years in the resources exploration industry working in over 45 countries in the Americas, Australia, Africa, Europe and Middle East.

He studied geophysics at Western, and also completed The Executive Program at Queen’s University. He enjoyed a lengthy and productive career, beginning as a field geophysicist with Geoterrex in Ottawa in 1972, rising to a manager at Geoterrex and its various successor companies, including CGG and Fugro. After the formation of Fugro Airborne Surveys in the early 2000’s, Mike was appointed President & Regional Manager, Americas and he led the successful effort to integrate many formerly competitive companies into a single worldwide airborne geophysical company. Don Salt award for 2020-2021 winners

Don Salt scholarship is in memory of a Canadian geophysicist named Don Salt, working for Falconbridge - now Xstrata - died tragically young about 50 years ago, and the company, in conjunction with his family, endowed a scholarship in his name to encourage students into geophysics, especially exploration geophysics awarded annually to 4th year students (and possibly 3rd year, if criteria are met) at the University of Toronto. Suitability of applicants is judged on the basis of the overall demonstrated interest and ability of the student, insofar as these factors apply to a career in geophysics.

Hundreds of attendees viewed the finalist presentations, interviews and live awards of the inaugural Frank-Arnott - Next Generation Explorers Award at this year's virtual PDAC 2021 convention!

It was a nail-biting finish, but the judges returned with their decision and the first-place winner and recipient of the $5000 award was the Inca Team!
Inca worked on the Yukon Plateau Dataset and featured students from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Peru, the University of Tasmania in Australia and Brigham Young University in the USA.
Team UWA from The University of Western Australia placed second and will receive the $3000 award, and the CSM Exploration Initiative from the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter placed third and will receive the $2000 award.

Title: Resource exploration for a net-zero emission future with electromagnetic methods in applied geophysics
Speaker: Andrei Swidinsky, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Geophysics, Colorado School of Mines and new Teck Chair in Exploration Geophysics at the University of Toronto

Abstract:

The World Health Organization has stated that “Climate change is the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century”. To address the climate crisis, every effort must be made to reduce the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Indeed, for Canada to achieve its 2050 goal of net-zero emissions, innovations in green energy and carbon dioxide (CO2) storage technology are essential. I believe that geophysics plays an important role in this goal through the strategic value of certain natural resources. This talk will describe my plans for a new research program as the Teck Chair in Exploration Geophysics at the University of Toronto. As summarized in the figure below, I will outline four potential graduate student projects studying novel electromagnetic (EM) methods to explore for blind hydrothermal systems & critical mineral deposits, characterize enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and monitor CO2 storage. I will also describe ideas for an additional project related to the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in mineral exploration, with the goal of developing university-industry partnerships focused on machine learning applications in geophysics.

Biography:

Andrei Swidinsky, P.hD
Andrei Swidinsky completed his undergraduate education in theoretical physics at the University of Guelph, and continued his graduate studies in geophysics at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Nigel Edwards. Upon finishing his doctorate in 2011, he spent the following two years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Geomar) working on geophysical joint inversion. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Department of Geophysics, where he has been a faculty member since 2013. His research interests revolve around the development of novel electrical and electromagnetic methodology, including its integration with other types of exploration data. He teaches a variety of courses on electrical and electromagnetic exploration techniques, ranging from introductory undergraduate classes to those at the advanced graduate level. He also directs the CSM Geophysics Field Camp, a four week comprehensive field course. A former KEGS scholarship recipient, in July 2021 he will be joining the University of Toronto, Department of Earth Sciences as Teck Chair in Exploration Geophysics.

1st CSEG Virtual Learning Series 2021: A Showcase of Canadian Innovation- February 2-4 & 8-11

This 1ST CSEG Virtual Learning Series (DLS) features seven strategic noon hour talks spread over 2 weeks. The objective is to provide a learning series focused on applied geoscience and the innovation occurring in the geosciences in Canada.

The oil and gas industry has once again found itself moving toward a low cost, efficient and sustainable future. As such, existing workflows have to be modernized by incorporating innovative ideas, new technologies have to show improved efficiency and every application has to resolve a particular social, environmental and economic problem. So, each speaker will address one particular major topic under development in Canada today.
Data quality improvements through innovations in seismic acquisition and reinterpretation of legacy seismic data are a couple of examples that will be covered showing how costs can be optimized while enhancing data quality and value of the interpretation.

Quantitative interpretation to provide deeper insight into subsurface reservoirs, machine learning application and adopting an integrated work flow for field development will show how new applications and repurposing old techniques with new perspective can solve modern petroleum exploration problems and impact business decisions.
Game-changing technologies within the hydrocarbon energy sector, as well as various innovative ideas in development as part of Canada’s energy transition will be discussed.

This virtual learning series invites anyone interested to learn about current innovative workflows, applications and technologies within the oil and gas industry. Participants will also gain insight into energy transition concepts.

Bio: Xiong Li received his BEng and MEng degrees from Chengdu Institute of Geology, and a PhD degree in 1991 from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He worked at Freie Universität Berlin in Germany, École Polytechnique de Montréal in Canada, and BHP in Melbourne of Australia before joining Fugro in Houston of Texas, USA in 2001. He has been working for CGG since 2013 with an acquisition of part of Fugro. He has been Chief Geophysicist of CGG Multi-Physics (and its predecessors in Houston) since 2005. He was a member of the team that developed the FALCON airborne gravity gradiometer technology. He and Yaoguo Li helped SEG and the Chinese Geophysical Society organize three GEM Workshops: in Beijing in 2011, in Chengdu in 2015, and in Xi’an in 2019. He has been an associate editor, for gravity and magnetic exploration methods, of GEOPHYSICS since 2005.

Title: High-Resolution Magnetic Data for an Improved Accuracy of Wellbore Positioning

Directional drilling maximizes the extraction of oil and gas while minimizing the cost. The Measurement While Drilling describes directional surveying and drilling-related measurements. A cost-effective MWD is to measure the distance and two angles: the dip measured by a triaxial accelerometer and the azimuth by a triaxial magnetometer. Magnetic survey relies on the principle of measuring the direction of the wellbore relative to the direction of the local geomagnetic field. Its accuracy is thus limited by the accuracy with which the Earth’s local magnetic field is known at the drilling site and time.

The MWD engineer uses the local gravity and magnetic fields to correct the measurements received from the downhole sensor for certain errors, including magnetic interference due to the drill string and local geology; then calculates the tool orientation from the corrected measurement; and finally advises the drilling engineer to adjust the drilling towards the desired direction. The local fields may be also used to perform a set of quality checks on the measured data.

We have developed a technique named MagCUBE^TM that converts surface-observed scalar total magnetic intensity anomalies into a subsurface vector crustal magnetic field distribution. We also estimate the uncertainties in the main magnetic field model, the disturbance field, and the local crustal field model. In particular, we build the crustal field model by using high-resolution magnetic data. A combination of these efforts results in an improved accuracy of wellbore positioning.

Speaker : David Schieck, MSc., P.Geoph (AB) P.Geo(ON)

Bio: David started his career in high school with a summer job as a “jug-hound” in S. Alberta. He continued his interests in seismology obtaining a BSc. at the University of Western Ontario then worked as a 3D seismic processor/programmer for several years. Early 90’s he obtained an MSc with the newly established CREWES project at University of Calgary. He worked on analyzing Ground roll dispersion and some of the early ideas of ground roll removal from P-Sv processing. After working for a mining engineering firm acquiring high resolution seismic in the jungles of Suriname to identify high liquefaction clays, he started his own engineering seismic firm Geophysical Applications (GAPS) in Guelph, Ontario. GAPS acquired high resolution seismic for landfills, exploration for groundwater wells in the SW Ontario, underground storage facilities in Sarnia and Cape Breton, and Kaolin clay delineation in Nova Scotia as well as acquiring large scale O&G exploration projects in NE USA. GAPS was absorbed by a seismic exploration company in western Canada and, for a brief stint, David was hired as the operations geophysicist at Husky Energy where he championed slip-sweep acquisition and began to move groups there into shear wave processing. Recently David took advantage of the downturn in Oil exploration purchased two Envirovibes, built a 3C landstreamer from unused ARAM MkII equipment, then partnered up with Echo Seismic to start a new environmental and engineering division that is promoting shear-shear high resolution seismic. David has a unique combination of data processing, shallow seismic and shear wave seismic knowledge.

Title: Shear landstreamer profiling for dam and levee investigation: Single pass MASW, P- & SH-wave reflection technology

Recent near surface seismic reflection developments using land-streamer have been commercialized in the Western Canadian by re-purposing former exploration seismic equipment. A 16,000 lb IVI Envirovibe is retrofitted with a 6,000 lb shear vibrator pack that can be rotated to transverse or inline orientation. An exploration ‘ARAM lite’ recording system has been mounted in the cab, 72X10Hz 3 component geophones are mounted on metal sleds spaced 1.5 m apart towed along by a kevlar belt along with vibe electronics and real-time GPS positioning. The high multiplicity and relatively large energy source enable non-intrusive high resolution, quantitative investigations in the range of 3 – 200m depths, not possible with any other geophysical methods.

Shear wave velocities (Vs), within consolidated rocks, are typically ½ the corresponding compressional or P-wave velocities (Vp) means the Vp/Vs ratios~2). However, within unconsolidated soil materials the ratio of Vp/Vs is often within the range of 6-12. This means vertical resolution of shear wave data within the near surface material, even if recovered frequencies are ½ that of P-wave, are 3 to 5 times higher when time sections are converted to depth. Vp is affected by fluids whereas Vs is not, refraction is dependent on increasing velocities whereas reflection is not. The towed SH landstreamer is ideally suited to earth dam applications and other near surface problems. A combination of seismic methodologies including refraction, P-wave and SH-wave reflection and MASW can be achieved in a single pass. A quick discussion of the theory of these methods, examples of real data and case studies will be presented.

Speaker : Tomas Naprstek, National Research Council Canada and Laurentian University (Ph.D. Candidate)

Bio: Tomas Naprstek completed his B.Sc. in Physics at the University of Waterloo in 2012 and his Geophysics M.Sc. at Laurentian University in 2014. He is in the process of finalizing his Geophysics Ph.D. at Laurentian University which focuses on the interpolation and interpretation of lineaments in aeromagnetic data. Since 2016, he has worked at the National Research Council of Canada. His research there primarily focuses on developing new processing and analysis techniques for remote sensing applications, such as the geolocation of wildfire data and aeromagnetic compensation for unmanned platforms.

Title: Machine Learning for the Interpolation and Interpretation of Aeromagnetic Data

Due to the continually lowering barrier for entry of usage, machine learning methods are being applied increasingly in a wide array of fields, and offer a new approach to solving established problems. In this presentation, the potential use of machine learning for aeromagnetic interpolation and interpretation is explored. We investigate interpolation using support vector machines and random forests, and show how their user-driven approach to machine learning enables a small improvement over standard interpolation methods for aeromagnetic data. Following this, convolution neural networks are applied to the interpretation of lineaments in an effort to estimate their strike and depth from aeromagnetic grids. This deep-learning approach requires extensive synthetic data for training; however we show that the method is a powerful tool, and has the potential to quickly and effectively estimate multiple source parameters in entire aeromagnetic grids.
